Welcome to 5th Grade!
Thank you for attending BTSN night on August 24th. Click here to access the Back to School Night information packet.
Fifth grade is a big leap academically from the fourth grade, but it is also a very special year. Learning in all subjects is hands-on and exciting and the units of study are typically quite interesting to the students. Students are busy learning about fractions, decimals and percents in math; weather, molecules and the human body in Science; and American history in Social Studies. We push ourselves in writing, expanding to five paragraph essays and expository writing development. This year students will be taking the STAR test for Science in addition to the CAASP in Language Arts and Math in the spring.
The fifth grade teachers work very closely to ensure that we are on the same page and that our students are receiving the best instruction possible. We use the following curricula for each subject area to guide us in our teaching, however we are always adjusting to meet the needs of our students and the rigorous Common Core Standards:
Language Arts: Reader's and Writer's Workshop through Benchmark Advance
Math: enVision Math
Science: Foss Science
Social Studies: Social Studies Alive
In addition to our regular classroom instruction fifth grade students at Baywood participate in instrumental music, PE, and Art. Our students also visit the library and the computer lab weekly. Additionally, they are lucky to choose an elective twice a year, rotating through teachers and curriculum such as STEM challenges, gardening and yoga.
The fifth grade team has very high expectations for our students which include participating in the classroom, completing all homework and classroom assignments on time, and demonstrating respect for self and others at all times. Social Emotional Learning is at the heart of many of our units and students learn to understand their emotions and how to work well with others.
